The TransAngeles Multiplex has expanded once again, and now includes free use of our hangliders, more skydiving platforms and a huge underwater area for exploration. Located in Jingi (153, 208, 22).
If someone had given you a pristine canvas, some drawing tools and asked you to draw, how could you not make something cool out of it.... something that was uniquely yours? When it comes to virtual land, homes, commercial centers, roads, highways or just tricking out something that some else made, it's my aim to give back to SL and make it better. In the true spirit of the Age of Collaboration, I believe that fresh ideas give birth to bigger and better ideas. When I buy land or create something, I try to make it better for the people who will own it after me. By better, I mean I try to make it work its best, to be pragmatic, and to have thought things through. At the very least, with that which I create, trick or tweak, it is my hope to spur the imagination of the next owner... to get their wheels rolling so that they can make the item even better for the person who comes after them. Collaboration works. On the international level that is now afforded to use via SL and the web, we celebrate this unique time in human history and join hands with other creative types to truly build a better world, one pixel at a time.

Second Life can be at once fascinating and frustrating for the newcomer. There is so much to learn, and great patience can be required at times. The payoff however, in terms of fun, is very high. For the past several months, we have been building, creating, teaching and developing real life concepts in Second Life.

If you or someone you know would like some help establishing a presence in Second Life, feel free to contact Tina either in world or through this website. Tina has experience in development, logistics, construction, brand building and marketing (RL & SL), and is available for collaboration and/or consultation on a per fee basis.

AUGUST 2007: ANNOUNCING THE BIRTH OF A.R.E.

The furtherst thing from my mind was the creation of another group, however, after reading some recent threads on the
Official Linden Blog I was inspired by the number of residents who asked Linden Lab to finish and/or restructure the protected water in and around the continents so that we can explore the mainland using vehicles. As an avid vehicle user (jets, helicopters, boats), this is something that has frustrated me since shortly after I joined Second Life. I don't have the time to actively recruit people for this cause, but I'm willing to establish the group just to see if we can't slowly get the ball rolling in this direction over time.

Exploration of the mainland needs to be taken to the next level. Imagine for a moment that all of the mainland continents are connected via protected waterways. Immediately, the character of the mainland would change, new possibilities would open up, ease-of-use and travel would increase, and a the potential for more economic development would likely increase as well: Instead of [only] connecting the continents with 100% protected water sims, many of the connecting sims could be one-third protected water and two-thirds auctioned mainland, similar to Islandia in some areas, and more like Pine Coast in others.

I believe that if such a project were undertaken by LL, this intercontinental project should be treated just like the creation of a new continent, as it will likely take hundreds of new sims. Most full time residents would agree that the new continents are somewhat boring, and that SL needs more "wow factor" in terms of specialty stretches of unique mainland. This project would address those issues, offering more unique mainland possibilities. The mainland needs more specialty pockets of land - streches of 10-50 sims, similar to the clusters found around Key Largo or Bermuda in some spots, maybe Monet or Dali in others, and building intercontinental waterways would be a great way to get this done.

Think about the impact this would have - traffic moving to and from the major land masses - having the ability to drive or fly to a friend's place if you choose. Just because in RL at present, our continents are not connected in such a way, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be in SL. I can imagine a better, more functional world. The current layout of the disconnected mainland, in my opinion, is an example of limited thinking and a waste of its true potential. People love exploring. Give us the chance to do that via these waterways - instead of trying to navigate the present mainland getting tangled in red property bans, etc. This would also boost the sales, enjoyment and ultimately the interest in and development of high performance vehicles.

The pessimist in me asks, "Who am I kidding? We can't even seem to get LL to enable smooth sim-crossings," however, I can still imagine a better world. Of course, the first thing most residents would say would be, "If you're going to start a group about the mainland environment, you've gotta stop the ad farms!" And yes, that is a noble mission, but Xerses Goff and the Arbor Project are doing that job, and doing it the best they can. As an Arbor Project member and planter of more than 3,000 trees in SL, I do believe that the ad farm issue is important, but that's an issue that should be left to the fine folks at Arbor. We'll continue to support them as much as we can.
• Connect the continents with protected waterways.
• Create uniform object creation/entry values in all protected water sims.
• Finish all of the continents - most are desperately incomplete.
• Create and allow navigation around the circumference of every continent.
Second Life Residents - Band together in support of a unified, navigable mainland grid!
If Linden Lab misses the boat on this, I believe it will be a major blunder. Think about a connected, navigable mainland. For a taste of what this would be like, go to the southern-most portion of Heterocera Atoll, where a waterway runs south connecting it to the Main Continent. There are almost always people in this corridor. It seems silly not to do the same thing between all of the mainland continents, especially when you consider the impact that such connectivity could have on the future development of the mainland. Gambling is gone, sex and roleplaying are under the microscope and many of us residents are saying okay, fine - now at least finish what you've started, LL - after all, we LIVE here.

At a time when WIRED magazine has touched a nerve with its August article on
A Deserted Second Life such a move by Linden Lab would be a step in the right direction. I would bet that there would be an overall increase in the amount of time that residents would spend online. Likely not exponential by any means, but measurable nonetheless. The "long trip" would become a reality and exploration would take on a whole new level. As a result, I believe that for many residents who enjoy traveling the grid, life would become many times more interesting than it is now.

to be continued...

To join A.R.E., do a group search in-world.
Why are only two continents connected? Perhaps for the same reason that most of the continents are incomplete.
